Adapted living accommodation

About this project

The Property

For this project, we were contacted by Scott, a local businessman who wanted us to construct a residence that would cater to the requirements of his disabled son and their young family.

At the moment, the residence was a traditional family home, which was acceptable for most people, but for his son, Kian, it was a challenging space to navigate. It had made it difficult for him to have any independence.

The Challenges

Creating a house for Kian and his family, as well as a setting that allows Kian to maintain his independence as he reaches his later teenage years, was the goal of the collaboration between Kian, his family, his carers, and the local architecture firm, Callinghams. One of the main challenges in this transformation was creating an atmosphere conducive to family life while simultaneously installing specialised equipment is challenging.

The Result

This residence has undergone not one but two expansions, resulting in the addition of a wing solely devoted to Kian and his carers. This wing features private bedrooms equipped with hoist access to Kian's en suite bathroom, which features high-end amenities such as an electronically adjustable bath, sink, and toilet.

All the entrance doors on the ground floor have been enlarged to accommodate his wheelchair. In addition, automated mechanisms ensure that they will open whenever he presses the appropriate button on the control panel developed specifically for him.

Because there is level access at all thresholds, both inside and outside, he can move around independently and efficiently throughout the entire ground floor and their recently redesigned and landscaped garden.

Kian can manage the lighting, integrated blinds, and sound system in the home. Additionally, the home's family room and security system are equipped with cutting-edge technology.
